The primary difference lies in their application design and manufacturing scope. ASTM A106 is formulated specifically for high-temperature, high-pressure service (such as power generation and steam lines) and is produced only as a seamless (SMLS) pipe. ASTM A53 is designed for general-purpose fluid and air transmission in low-to-medium pressure installations. It is available in three types: Type F (furnace-butt welded), Type E (electric resistance welded - ERW), and Type S (seamless). ASTM A106 also features tighter silicon limits (minimum 0.10%) to optimize high-temperature performance.
API 5L defines two Product Specification Levels: PSL1 provides standard quality requirements for line pipe, while PSL2 imposes stricter criteria, including mandatory Charpy impact testing (for fracture toughness evaluation), limits on chemical compositions (carbon equivalent values), and traceability requirements.
